The Agatha Christie-Inspired Quest in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered Can Only Be Beat by a Manipulative Genius

One of this year’s biggest surprises has been The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. Playing the Whodunit? quest once more was a delight.

OVERVIEW

  • The characters and quest design of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered are well-known.
  • The Dark Brotherhood questline and the Whodunit? quest are the only questlines that demonstrate this excellence.
  • What the devil did? gives us control and places us in a position where every decision we make counts.

Perhaps one of the most well-known video games ever made is The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, and a large part of its appeal stems from how flawlessly the open-world role-playing game is executed. However, prior to the release of Skyrim, Bethesda created some of the greatest quests ever in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

One quest in that series stands out, but the Dark Brotherhood questline is among the greatest in game history. Whodunit? is a murder mystery that takes place inside the secured grounds of Summitmist Manor in Skingrad. Inspired by Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, this quest masterfully solves the mystery. This is what you should know.

One of the greatest quests in the history of The Elder Scrolls is “Whodunit?”

The Whodunit? quest in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.

In order to start Whodunit?, you must complete the Dark Brotherhood questline. Once you finish “The Lonely Wanderer” and “Bad Medicine,” Ocheeva gives you the mission. After that, you’ll be taken to Summitmist Manor in Skingrad and made to appear as a visitor at an apparently typical social event. However, that’s where the madness begins.

Memory of TES: Whodunit? One of the six individuals who enter a mansion pretending to be on a treasure hunt is actually a paid assassin who has been hired to murder the others. The curve? The assassin is you.

You and five other unwary partygoers are locked inside the manor when you arrive, and you are all marked for execution. The twist in the game, however, comes at that point. As implied by the quest’s name, you are here to solve a murder mystery. But no, you must weed out every other visitor without drawing suspicion.

The cast of (Soon-to-Be) Corpses is vibrant. The flirtatious Dunmer is Dovesi Dran. The Breton matron Matilde Petit is inquisitive. An affluent Imperial is Neville. Primo Antonius was a soldier once. And a drunken Nord is Nels the Naughty. You can take advantage of the peculiarities, prejudices, and resentments of each of these characters. What’s even better is that you can do it however you like.

The best questline we have ever seen in a TES game. I really enjoyed this one!

In Whodunit?, the visitors aren’t only there to die. They respond to deaths and events. The surviving guests will start to suspect each other, depending on the murder order and player interactions. They may even commit murder themselves in certain circumstances. If there are only three guests left, for example, Dovesi might lose her temper and attack Matilde or Primo, thinking she is protecting herself from the real murderer.

Bethesda’s storytelling reaches its zenith at this point.

Whodunit? feels like a real puzzle box when you play it like this. Your decisions are all important. Where do you go in the manor, what do you say to whom, and who do you kill first? Everything counts, so be sure to save before entering the manor or before making any significant decisions while there.

It differs from other quests in Oblivion Remastered because of its tone and structure. The entire quest, if you want to find it, is full of suspense and dark humor. As soon as you get there, you can even declare that you’re an assassin if you’d like, but the other guests will just assume you’re a prankster.

In contrast to most murder mysteries, Whodunit? focuses on how to commit a crime without getting caught rather than who did it. It is among the greatest quests in Oblivion Remastered, and we will always be appreciative that Bethesda remastered the game so we could relive the entire experience.
